Excelsior Springs Community Pharmacy is Just What the Doctor Ordered

Excelsior Springs, Mo.—Located just down the hallway from Primary Care at Excelsior Springs Hospital, the Excelsior Springs Community Pharmacy is more than a convenient stop for prescriptions; it’s a welcoming place where friendly service and familiar faces create a comforting hometown pharmacy experience.

What many might not realize is that the Community Pharmacy isn’t just for hospital patients; it’s open to everyone. Whether you’re visiting the hospital for care or simply need a trusted local pharmacy, you’ll find the doors wide open and a warm welcome waiting.

The hospital’s pharmacy opened to the public in 2019 to a modest reception. Still, it wasn’t until family-owned Monroe’s Pharmacy suddenly closed in 2021 that many of their former customers went searching for an alternative option with a similar hometown feel that they started to see an influx of new patrons.

From anywhere in town, the Excelsior Springs Community Pharmacy is just a short drive away. Nestled in the hospital complex, it’s a valuable—but often overlooked—resource for all residents.
Excelsior Springs Community Pharmacy is easily accessible through its own dedicated entrance at the hospital, making it a convenient stop for locals.

“We started to get a lot more patients when Monroe’s closed,” said pharmacist Heather Buehrer. She says maintaining the small-town pharmacy feel of Monroe’s and Brown’s has been a priority for their team. Since joining the team in 2021, she’s helped shape the pharmacy into a space that blends the best of both hospital expertise and local, personalized service.

The professionals at the Community Pharmacy focus on building trust. They know customers and their families by name, participate in wellness events at the community center, and take their time explaining prescriptions and services. They focus on quality over quantity—the best metric to measure success is customer satisfaction—and they make sure every individual understands their medications and feels confident in their care. Even though prescriptions cover most of their services, there is more to the pharmacy than meets the eye.

Staff are always ready to answer questions and coordinate care with providers down the hall.

Excelsior Springs Community Pharmacy isn’t just about filling prescriptions. The well-staffed team goes above and beyond to meet the community’s needs with a range of services that make health and wellness easier and more accessible.

An example of their outreach is the implementation of a new medication disposal program. Since a local police specialist had a dangerous encounter with lethal chemicals in the former DEA drug takeback bin at ESPD headquarters in October of 2023, Excelsior Springs has been without a way to responsibly dispose of unwanted or expired medications locally. Buehrer says they plan to remedy this, as they will be adding a community disposal service later this year. Until this free benefit is up and running, they will continue to supply Deterra deactivation kits at no direct cost to the public. Deterra kits are safe, convenient pouches used to dispose of unused or expired medications at home. Simply add water and any unwanted pills, patches, or liquids to the pouch, and within minutes, the contents are neutralized, making them safe to throw away in the household trash.

Buehrer was proud to announce that the Community Pharmacy has also recently expanded its in-house vaccination services, offering vaccines for common ailments without the hassle of extra trips. Thanks to their close location to Primary Care, coordination with providers is quick and easy.

The ESH Community Pharmacy team also assists patients with glucose monitoring, discharge counseling, and cost-saving programs like lower copays or emergency script refills when necessary.

Pharmacist Heather Buehrer prepares prescriptions with care. Customers appreciate the personalized service and the warm, local touch she brings to the pharmacy.

To better serve the community, Excelsior Springs Community Pharmacy now offers extended hours, open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You’ll find them inside Excelsior Springs Hospital at 1700 Rainbow Boulevard, and you can always call 816-629-3667 for questions or support.

Whether you’re picking up a prescription, asking a question, or just stopping by, you’ll find a knowledgeable, compassionate team ready to help you take the next step toward better health.
