Unusual Sky Phenomenon Over Lawson Draws Multiple Witnesses and Photos
A mysterious sighting in the skies above Lawson early Saturday morning has sparked curiosity and conversation among area residents, with multiple people now coming forward to say they saw something strange.
According to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), a witness reported seeing what appeared to be a “perpendicular tube” in the sky over Lawson around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. The witness described the object as resembling a wormhole, out of which emerged more than 38 bright, orb-shaped lights that moved northeast across the sky.
Carl Harper, a MUFON field investigator, notified the Excelsior Citizen of the report on Monday, May 5. Following a post about the incident on Facebook, additional witnesses began to come forward.
“Two more individuals reached out after the post,” Harper said, “and one even shared a photo that appears to show the tube-shaped anomaly.”
Several local residents responded to the Excelsior Citizen’s post, sharing their own accounts.
Daniel Burke commented, “Idk about 38 lights but it looked like someone was running a light straight up in the air south of Lawson toward Salem a few nights last week.”
That prompted a response from Brennen Jones, who noted the light was visible “between Excelsior and Lawson,” adding that he saw it from the backside of Excelsior around 10:25 p.m. on May 1.
Rachel Nafzinger, who lives outside of Lawson, said she noticed the light at about 10:00 p.m. that same evening. “When I saw the light it was barely visible to the naked eye so I started taking pictures,” she said.

Shari Felsinger also reported a sighting on May 1 around 10:30 p.m. and shared two photos, one taken in night-vision mode and the other without enhancement.

Another local, Garret Meyer, said he saw the light on May 1 at 10:33 p.m. while letting his dog out. He described the sighting as lasting 10 to 15 minutes.
“I thought it was a spotlight from the ground at first, but there was nothing below what I saw in the picture,” Meyer said. “The clouds weren’t lit up like they would be with a spotlight. I’m southeast of Excelsior Springs, and it was mostly south and slightly east of me—maybe past Orrick.”
Harper encourages anyone else who may have seen something unusual in the skies over Lawson or nearby areas on May 1 or May 3 to report their experience. Witnesses can file a report with MUFON at www.mufon.com or reach out directly to Harper at mufoninv39217@gmail.com
“We’re just trying to document what people saw,” Harper said. “It’s a fascinating report, and if others saw it too, we’d love to hear from them.”
