Meet the Charming Abby’s Sweet Peas

Abby’s Sweet Peas (Abigail’s) opened their doors at 459 S Thomson Avenue on September 1st, 2023, bringing a new level of charm to downtown. The store’s owner Abby Muehlebach chatted with the Citizen about the story behind her store, her passion for the local business community and how a recent Facebook hacking has affected her.

Abby has been in business for fifteen years. Originally in Boonville, when she first opened shop here in Excelsior, she would still make the drive to Boonville to be open on the weekends out there. Her store sells gifts for all ages including jewelry, women’s fashion, gourmet food, candles and more. Abby has plans to expand the baby section of her store to include things for kids up to seven years old as well. You can even keep an eye on her Facebook page for soup and beer breads coming this fall!

When talking about starting her store Abby says she “doesn’t do a lot of brand names because it’s always the brand that cost more money.” She looks for nice products that her customers can afford. She says her customers can “feel like they shopped in a boutique without spending a lot of money.”

About a third of Abby’s business is packaged gourmet food. She has everything from popcorn to freeze dried candy and honey. Stop in any day of the week and you will be offered a free sample! She keeps fifty different flavors of popcorn in stock at any given time and the candies are delectable.

Despite the sweets offered in the store, the sweetest part about Abby’s is her passion for her business and the local business community here in Excelsior. When you shop at Abby’s, you will be offered a free charm with your purchase. A practice Abby has been doing for years. Despite many people calling it “being charmed at Abby’s”, Abby wants it to be “being charmed in Excelsior Springs”! When she had her Boonville location this was something she did with other local business owners. She would buy them charms specific to their business for them to hand out to customers as a nice little memento from their time in the stores. Abby would love to have other businesses downtown take part in this with her.

Unfortunately, about seven weeks ago Abby’s Facebook was hacked, both her personal page and her business page (Abigail’s Sweet Peas). The hackers got ahold of the credit card linked to her business page and started to wreak havoc. Despite trying to work with Facebook to get her account back, Abby lost her Facebook business page with over two thousand followers and had to start completely over. The new Facebook page is called “Abby’s Sweet Peas”, and you can follow it here.

No matter what you are looking for, you can find something you will love inside Abby’s. Open Mondays and Wednesday-Saturday 11ish-4:30 and seven days a week during November and December. We are lucky to have such a sweet place downtown!
