The Excelsior Springs City Council gained a new member and welcomed back an incumbent during a special session on Friday, April 12th. John McGovern was sworn in for his first term, joining Stephen Spear, who began his second term.

Two new liquor licenses were approved for Fast Zone and Huey’s Hidden Vault. The Downtown Excelsior Partnership (DEP) presented a successful annual report showcasing economic development, community engagement, and increased online presence. Employee policy updates include flexible merit increases, faster wage disbursement, and more frequent vacation payouts.

Buckle up; Excelsior Springs is on the cusp of a potential housing boom. With an abundance of developable land, the city is poised for a surge in new homes, outpacing neighboring communities’ growth. Melinda Mehaffy, Economic Development Director, hints at a transformation on the horizon, with “conversations going on right now about entire subdivisions being built” instead of scattered single-home construction that has been seen in the past.

Sonya Morgan, a dedicated public servant who has served on the Excelsior Springs City Council for 12 years, was honored with a proclamation at an early-morning work session Friday. Throughout her tenure, Morgan has driven numerous initiatives that have significantly enhanced Excelsior Springs.
