Excelsior Springs, Mo. (January 12, 2026) — City Manager Molly McGovern has announced her retirement and submitted a resignation letter to Mayor Mark Spohn, with her departure effective March 3, 2026.

In a letter dated Jan. 11, 2026, McGovern said she has been “honored to serve the City of Excelsior Springs” for a total of 27 years, including two separate periods of employment: February 1981 through April 1999, and November 2016 through March 2026.

“During that time, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated elected officials, staff, and community partners to advance meaningful progress for this community,” McGovern wrote.

McGovern said she is proud of the city’s accomplishments during her tenure and expressed confidence in Excelsior Springs’ future.

“I am proud of the accomplishments achieved over the years and confident the City will continue its strong tradition of community building, collaboration, and forward-looking leadership,” she wrote. “Serving the residents of Excelsior Springs has been deeply meaningful, and I appreciate the opportunity to have been part of an exceptional team.”

McGovern framed the decision as a transition point after a long career in public service.

“As I look ahead to retirement, I do so with gratitude and reflection,” she wrote. “It is possible to both love this work and also recognize when it is time to change one’s role.”

The Excelsior Citizen will continue coverage of McGovern’s departure in the weeks ahead, including a closer look at key projects during her tenure and updates on the city’s transition plans.
