Excelsior Springs, Mo. — One year after the house explosion that claimed the lives of Oliver and Katherine Campbell and their beloved dog, Cinnamon, neighbors gathered on a cool Saturday morning to remember the couple and the impact they left on their community.

The August 23, 2024, blast leveled the Campbells’ home on Kimberly Drive, scattering debris across the neighborhood and igniting a fire that complicated rescue efforts. Investigators later determined that a propane gas leak was to blame, though the exact ignition source remains undetermined. Oliver, 70, was a 1973 graduate of Excelsior Springs High School, while Kathy, 65, worked for years as a para in the Excelsior Springs School District.

The Campbell home on Kimberly Drive was reduced to rubble after a powerful explosion on August 23, 2024, claiming the lives of Oliver and Kathy Campbell and their dog, Cinnamon.

This weekend, neighbors stood together once again, not in shock and grief as they had one year ago, but in reflection. They shared stories about Oliver’s steady presence, Kathy’s kindness, and the warmth both brought to the neighborhood.

The property’s new owners attended as well, introducing themselves to the community and promising to honor the memory of the Campbells. “We will find a way to pay tribute to them as we rebuild,” they told neighbors.

Some tributes were deeply personal. Just days after the incident, one neighbor tied a pink ribbon around a tree in her yard as a nod to Kathy’s favorite color. Nearly a year later, the ribbon still remains, a simple but enduring reminder of the Campbells. “It’s something small, but it helps keep their memory alive,” she said quietly.

As the morning drew to a close, the neighbors peacefully dispersed, some lingering for one last conversation, others walking back to their homes in silence. Though the street soon returned to its usual stillness, the memories that were shared ensured that Oliver and Kathy Campbell’s presence would continue to be felt among those who knew and loved them.
