Traffic Snarled on Highway 69 After Rear-End Collision Involving Three Vehicles
Excelsior Springs, Mo. – Traffic on U.S. Highway 69 north of Excelsior Springs came to a standstill Tuesday afternoon after a three-vehicle crash closed both lanes for about half an hour.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 4:10 p.m. on August 19 at the intersection of U.S. 69 and NE 174th Street. A northbound 1997 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 19-year-old man from Lawson, struck the rear of a 2000 Acura Integra, pushing it into a 2015 Mazda MX-5 stopped at the intersection.
All three vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene. A 63-year-old woman from Lawson, driving the Mazda, suffered minor injuries and was transported by Kearney Fire to Liberty Hospital.
Adding to the confusion for drivers, just south of the crash, a grain truck had jack-knifed and was being towed at the same time. That incident fueled speculation online about whether the truck was connected to the wreck, though the MSHP report confirmed it was not.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene. Both lanes of traffic reopened after the roadway was cleared.
