Video Tour of Newly Renovated Elkhorn Elementary
Believe it or not, Excelsior Springs School District actually has three elementary schools! Elkhorn Elementary is the district’s rural gem located about four miles west of Wood Heights. In April of 2020 residents of Excelsior Springs passed Prop T, a no tax increase school bond levy to help make improvements to many of the district’s facilities. These funds have been used most notably to build the entirely new Cornerstone Elementary, but funds were also used to refurbish and remodel the high school, middle school and Elkhorn Elementary. In addition, Westview Elementary has been remodeled and will now house the Early Childhood Center for all preschool aged students in the district. Although construction projects at Elkhorn began during the Spring semester of 2021 the finishing touches were still being added up until the very last moments the doors opened for Elkhorn’s open house held on Tuesday, August 24. Principal, Dr. Annette Shelton said that she was very proud of her staff who all pitched in to get the building ready and to make the classrooms welcoming and cozy for students. A major component of the renovations at Elkhorn was the removal of the entire eastern wing of the school which was then rebuilt to include a new music room that doubles as a FEMA storm shelter for both students and the surrounding community. Dr. Shelton concluded by saying, “We just want to thank the citizens of Excelsior Springs for making this all possible!”
*With increases in property values and population growth the school district has plans to propose another no tax increase bond levy to address the aging Lewis Elementary possibly as soon as 2023.
