Tigers Take One of Three at Excelsior Springs Soccer Tournament
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. – The annual Excelsior Springs Soccer Tournament took place last week with the Tigers dropping two of three matches.
The Tigers opened with Kansas Class 6A Blue Valley North, which controlled possession on the way to an 8-0 win. Junior goalkeeper Brett Jones was busy all night, collecting 18 saves, but the Mustang attack proved too much to handle.
The Tigers bounced back Sept. 11 with a 1-0 win over Maryville. Senior Brady Schoonover scored the lone goal of the match, while Jones added seven saves to record his second shutout of the season.
Excelsior Springs closed the tournament Sept. 13 against Barstow in another defensive battle, falling 1-0. The Tigers managed only one shot on goal, while Jones tallied 15 saves but allowed one to slip through for the Knights’ winning score.
Blue Valley North went on to win the tournament with a 3-0 record.
The Tigers return to action Sept. 15 with a road match at Kearney (1-5), before hosting North Kansas City (5-1) on Sept. 18 in what will likely be one of their toughest tests of the young season.
