Excelsior Springs, Mo. — A house fire broke out at approximately 12:45 p.m. today at a residence on Berton Street after the homeowner attempted to burn weeds near the foundation of his home.

According to officials, embers from the burning weeds went under the siding, sparking a fire inside the structure. The homeowner initially tried to extinguish the flames with a garden hose, but the fire quickly spread through the wall into the attic.

Excelsior Springs police officers were first to arrive on scene and also attempted to help suppress the fire with a garden hose. When the Excelsior Springs Fire Department arrived, crews found smoke and flames spreading through the attic. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control, though the extent of damage remains uncertain. Early indications point to significant smoke damage throughout the home.

The Excelsior Springs Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Kearney Fire Department and Ray County Ambulance District. No injuries have been reported.
