Garland Avenue Bridge Closed Due to Safety Concerns
Excelsior Springs, MO–The Garland Avenue Bridge, a historic landmark in downtown Excelsior Springs, known to many locals simply as “the bridge by the Elms Hotel,” was abruptly closed Monday morning, May 13th, 2024, after Public Works officials discovered a significant safety hazard.
The bridge, which had already been slated for replacement due to ongoing deterioration, had shown increased signs of distress in recent weeks. A noticeable dip developed at the east end, followed by the formation of a sizeable pothole on Monday morning. Upon further inspection, a large void beneath the bridge deck was identified.
“The safety of our residents is what’s most important,” said Excelsior Springs Public Works Director Chad Birdsong. “After consulting with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the immediate closure of the bridge was deemed necessary.”
This isn’t the first time the Garland Avenue Bridge has faced challenges. A similar issue occurred in 2012, though repairs were possible. However, continued erosion and overall bridge deterioration caused partly by flooding have necessitated a full replacement.
According to Birdsong, the completion of a new bridge is very tentatively scheduled for late summer or early fall of 2025. While preliminary plans mirroring the design of 10 Highway bridges completed in 2015 (including iron railings, street lamps, a pedestrian walkway, and decorative concrete) have been submitted to MoDOT, final engineering plans and project bidding are still to come. Bidding is expected in the fall or winter of 2024, with construction commencing in late winter or early spring of 2025.
