Collins Claims Title as Tigers Finish Sixth at Holiday Tournament
Lee’s Summit, Mo. (December 20, 2025) – The holiday break started for students Friday afternoon, but Tiger wrestlers hit the mats Friday night and Saturday at the Lee’s Summit Holiday Tournament. Lee’s Summit High School hosted 25 schools as part of its annual two-day tournament, with pool matches on Friday night and bracket matches taking place Saturday. The Tigers took 13 wrestlers and finished sixth as a team with one champion, one second-place finish, and four fourth-place finishes.
Senior Cooper Collins led the way for the Tigers with a first-place finish at 144 pounds. He went 4-0 in his pool Friday night with three first-period wins by fall and a third-period win by fall to advance to the bracket as the No. 1 seed. He pinned Ryan Raney of Oak Grove with one second remaining in the opening round of the bracket Saturday. He fell behind in the semifinal match to Lincoln Stearns of Waynesville on a takedown with 10 seconds remaining in the first period. Collins picked up an escape and a takedown in the second period and then battled his way to an 8-7 win to advance to the championship match. He built a 12-0 lead over Tommy Wolfgeher of Park Hill South before winning by fall in the second period to claim the championship.
Junior Carson VanDoremalen went undefeated in the 138-pound pool. He earned two wins by fall and two technical falls to win his pool and advance to the championship bracket. He dominated Xander Minton of Blue Springs South in the opening round of the bracket with a 13-3 major decision. Rylon Collier of Blue Springs did not pose much of a threat in the second round, as VanDoremalen advanced with a 12-2 major decision to reach the championship match against Joseph Woodard of Springfield Kickapoo. Woodard opened the scoring with a takedown with 13 seconds remaining in the first period, but VanDoremalen earned an escape to pull the score to 3-1. He started the second period on bottom, recording an escape and a takedown to take a 5-3 lead. Woodard responded with an escape and takedown to regain the lead at 7-5. An escape made it 7-6, but Woodard added another escape in the third period to secure an 8-6 win.
Senior Gaige Carr and sophomore Logan Bates each advanced to the championship brackets of their weight classes and finished fourth. Carr went 3-0 Friday night at 150 pounds before going 1-2 Saturday. He opened the day with a 3-0 win over Jackson Atherton of Staley before falling 7-5 to Mickey Seymore of Oak Grove in the semifinal. He dropped the third-place match to Kale Lepert of Lee’s Summit North by a score of 7-2.
Bates earned one technical fall and two wins by fall Friday night before going 1-2 in the 120-pound bracket Saturday. He built a 5-1 first-period lead over Mahammad Mahboobi of North Kansas City before winning by fall. He later dropped matches by fall to Ryzen Isringhausen of Branson and Finn Wilson of Columbia Battle to finish fourth.
Oak Grove won the team title with 280.5 points. Lee’s Summit West finished second with 275.5 points, followed by Springfield Kickapoo with 229.5 points. Olathe North placed fourth with 227.5 points, and Lee’s Summit finished fifth with 196 points. The Tigers totaled 191 points to finish sixth overall.
