Citizen Pet of the Week: Calamity

Excelsior Springs, Mo. (January 12, 2025)Welcome to another edition of Pet of the Week! This week, meet Calamity, an adorable eight-year-old Chihuahua owned by Andra Bensend.

The Bensend family adopted Calamity from a rescue in St. Louis in June 2023. She had ended up at the shelter after her owner was sent to assisted living. Andra had seen her picture online and knew she needed her. Calamity was understandably shy when she joined the Bensend family, but Andra says she quickly “blossomed into a silly and lazy girl who loves her people.”

Andra says Calamity isn’t your typical Chihuahua, as she rarely yaps. Calamity is living a spoiled life, sleeping in her owners’ bed every night and waking up to cuddles and playtime every day. She has her routine but spends a lot of the day sleeping in her favorite spot on the sofa.

When Calamity was born, one of her eyes didn’t fully develop, leaving her with a smaller, cloudy eye. It doesn’t cause her pain, and she does have some vision from it. Andra shared with the Citizen that Calamity “has a wonderful care team with Dr. Gardner and ESAC who help us to keep her healthy and happy.” Calamity goes everywhere with Andra, and she shared Calamity’s eye “is the second thing people notice about her. The first thing people notice is that she’s adorable!”

Andra shared Calamity’s dad’s favorite thing about her is how loving she is and how she wakes him up with cuddles and kisses in the morning. Andra’s favorite thing is when she curls up next to me and looks at me with her kind eyes as if to say that she’s happy we’re together.

A big thank you to Andra for sharing Calamity with the Citizen this week. Stay tuned next week to meet another furry citizen!
