City Shares More Information on Upcoming Redgate Trash Transition
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. (Sept. 15, 2025) – Excelsior Springs residents will see major changes in their trash and recycling service this month as the city transitions from Allied/Republic to Redgate Disposal. The new provider begins service on Monday, Sept. 29, 2025, ending a long relationship with Allied.
New Carts Coming Soon
Starting the week of Sept. 15, Redgate will begin delivering new 65-gallon poly carts (some residents have already begun receiving their carts!). Each household will receive one black trash cart with a red lid and one black recycling cart with a yellow lid. Residents are asked not to use the new carts until Redgate’s service officially begins on Sept. 29.
The base rate for the new service will be $23.50 per month—down from the current $25 fee. Additional carts are available for $7 per month each. Requests can be made through Public Works at 816-630-0755 ext. 4421.
Public Works Director Chad Birdsong told the City Council during a recent work session that residents are already signing up for extra carts, with around 800 expected to be added to the system. Redgate is supplying the base carts, while city staff will help deliver additional carts to households. “We’ve already got people signing up for second and third carts,” Birdsong said. “We want to make sure families that need the extra capacity are taken care of.”
Blue Carts Must Be Returned
The final week of Allied service will run Sept. 22–26. All blue Allied trash and recycling carts must be placed at the curb on residents’ normal collection day during that week for servicing and pickup. Blue carts will not be serviced after Sept. 26, and residents may be charged a replacement fee if carts are not returned.
Birdsong said Allied teams will be working alongside city staff that week to remove all remaining blue carts. “We’ve told people that the blue carts are not theirs to keep,” he said. “Those need to be out at the curb during the last week of service; otherwise, there will be issues we’ll have to work through after Allied is gone.”
Communication Push Underway
City leaders say they are taking extra steps to avoid confusion during the transition. Information about the switch has been mailed in water bill notices, shared on the City of Excelsior Springs and Excelsior Citizen websites, and posted to social media. Redgate is also mailing postcards directly to households, and flyers will be attached to the new carts when they arrive.
“We know there will be a lot of questions, especially that first week,” Birdsong told the Council. “We’re preparing for an ‘all hands on deck’ approach to answer phone calls and help residents navigate the change.”
Route Changes and Bulk Pickup
Some trash routes have changed as part of the new contract. Residents are encouraged to visit cityofesmo.com to view the interactive map or call Public Works for assistance. Bulk item pickup will now be scheduled directly through Redgate.
Despite the logistical challenges, Birdsong expressed optimism about the changeover. “It’s a big transition, but we feel good about where we’ve landed,” he said. “Rates are lower, service will be streamlined, and we’ve put a lot of information out so people are prepared.”
