Excelsior Springs Tigers Claw Their Way to State Bowling Championship

Belton, MO – In a whirlwind of strikes, spares, and turkeys, the Excelsior Springs Tigers High School Bowling Team showcased their resilience at the State Championship held at Aaron’s Family Fun Center in Belton, Missouri. Led by coach Jerry Ferrel Jr., bowlers Brody Hurla, Olivia Smith, Brighton Hibschle, Dylan Carter, and Quinnlynn Davis aimed to outscore their opponents and stay competitive.

Their path to the championship was unique. After an underwhelming performance at the conference tournament, the team didn’t initially qualify for the state championships. However, two teams dropped out, granting the Tigers a last-minute opportunity. Since October, the team had practiced diligently every Wednesday for two hours, determined to be among the best in the Kansas City metro area, and they felt ready for the challenge.

In high school bowling, tournaments are played in the Baker style, where five bowlers take turns bowling different frames. As the competition unfolded, the Tigers faced formidable opponents like the Lee’s Summit West Titans, Lee’s Summit North Broncos, Staley Falcons, and Fort Osage Indians – teams that had won in the Tigers’ district and were top contenders.

Throughout the day, the Tigers experienced a roller coaster of scores. There were moments of frustration as they struggled to roll above 150. Despite the lows, they remained determined, managing to throw a couple of high games towards the end, including one that helped them upset second-place Lee’s Summit North. The Tigers turned the tide in the second half with games of 214, 224, and 246, propelling them from near the bottom of the standings all the way up to 13th place.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Coach Ferrel Jr. commended their resilience and perseverance. “I’m incredibly proud of how our team rallied together despite the obstacles we faced,” he said. Olivia Smith, a key player, echoed this sentiment: “It was a long day, but we somehow managed to pull it together.” Looking ahead, Brighton Hibschle expressed excitement about leading the team next year: “I’ll be excited to have some new bowlers to help us go to state again next year.”

While they may not have clinched the top spot, the Excelsior Springs Tigers left the championship feeling accomplished and proud of their journey.
