Two Confirmed Dead in Plane Crash Near Midwest National Air Center
Excelsior Springs, Mo. — Two people have died following a small plane crash just north of the Midwest National Air Center near Mosby late Wednesday morning.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving calls just before noon about heavy smoke coming from a field near NE 140th Street and Rhodus Road. Callers believed it may have been from a plane crash.
When deputies arrived, they located a Cessna C340 engulfed in flames in a nearby soybean field. Despite the efforts of multiple fire departments, the two occupants inside were confirmed deceased.
Officials say preliminary information indicates the aircraft had originated from an airport in the St. Louis metro area and appeared to have been attempting to land at the Midwest National Air Center when the crash occurred.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released. Authorities are working to confirm their identities before notifying next of kin.
Air traffic at the Midwest National Air Center has been suspended until 5 p.m. while the investigation continues.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will take over the investigation into the cause of the crash.
Clay County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Sarah Boyd provided an update at the airport earlier this afternoon, emphasizing that details are still developing.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
