Speech and Debate Team Triumphs at District Tournament

In the competitive arena of speech and debate, the Excelsior Springs High School team has once again showcased their prowess, clinching top honors and accolades at the recent district tournament. Led by their dedicated coach, Jeff Haney, this talented group of students has proven formidable contenders, demonstrating a remarkable blend of skill, dedication, and passion.

Among the standout performers at the competition was Katie Houck, whose exceptional talent and captivating delivery earned her first place in the prose category. With her emotive storytelling and masterful interpretation, Houck left an indelible mark on judges and spectators, sending her to the state competition.

But the team’s success did not stop there. Em Rice distinguished themselves with a stellar performance in informative speaking, securing a well-deserved second place. Their ability to engage, educate, and entertain the audience exemplifies the caliber of talent nurtured within and earned them a spot to take on the state tournament.

Audrey Ishmael proved her versatility and skill by clinching multiple placements, including second in dramatic interpretation and third in poetry. Her ability to inhabit diverse characters and convey a range of emotions speaks volumes about her dedication to the craft, and she is headed back to state for the second year.

Jason Besherse’s poignant and persuasive oratory earned him a third-place finish in Original Oration. He managed to secure his way into the state tournament, allowing him to finish his senior year strong.

Maddox Stewart’s captivating storytelling landed him in fourth place. These achievements underscore the team’s strength across various speech genres and their ability to command attention and leave a lasting impression on audiences.

Brody Hurla showcased his versatility with impressive showings in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking and Radio Speaking, earning fifth and seventh place, respectively. 

Cristian Canales demonstrated his comedic timing and flair for performance with a sixth-place finish in Humorous Interpretation, while Cole Dickey and Cristian Canales showcased their chemistry and teamwork with a sixth-place finish in duo acting. Their collaborative spirit and synchronicity on stage exemplify the camaraderie and support that defines the Excelsior Springs speech and debate team.

The Excelsior Springs team remains focused and determined as they prepare to represent their school at the state level. Under the guidance of Coach Haney, they continue to refine their skills, expand their repertoire, and push the boundaries of their abilities. Their collective achievements are a culmination of their hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence. “We are so blessed at Excelsior Springs High School to have these students,” Coach Jeff Haney said.

The Excelsior Citizen will follow the speech and debate team as they head next week to qualify for nationals and go to the state competition.
