Hall of Waters Gets Much-Needed Fix Just in Time for the Holidays
The iconic Hall of Waters, a beloved landmark in the heart of Excelsior Springs, has just wrapped up a temporary shoring project. This much-needed work focused on the old well room right under the north lawn and is a big step in keeping the historic building safe and sound as city staff search for long term solutions.
For more than a year, city officials and structural experts worked to figure out the best way to fix the well room under the north yard. This room, home to the original Superior Spring well, has seen better days, with lots of damage from water seeping in over the years. This damage wasn’t just a small problem – the well room’s ceiling is a key part of holding up the whole Hall of Waters. If it gave way, it could endanger the entire building.
Teaming up with engineering pros from Pullman and Brand Safeway, the city staff came up with a plan to shore up the structure. This was a big step in keeping things stable and safe, especially since the well room is such an important piece of the building’s foundation.
The fix cost the city $498,700, but it’s a critical stopgap while they look for a more permanent solution and the resources to implement it.
The shoring project is finishing up just as the town is gearing up for holiday celebrations downtown. With the work done, the Mayor’s Christmas tree lighting is all set to light up the north lawn after the Christmas parade on November 18th. Plus, the Hall of Waters is getting ready to open its Hall of Trees, making it a double celebration.
