Excelsior Springs Psychiatric Services Reports to ES SAFE Committee

Excelsior Springs Psychiatric Services Department

In Excelsior Springs, a dedicated assembly of over thirty healthcare and youth service professionals convene monthly under the banner of the ES SAFE (Substance-Abuse Free Environment) Committee. Their mission is to forge a collaborative front against youth drug abuse through education and collective action. This initiative comes in response to alarming data on the mental health challenges facing our community’s youth, prompting a partnership between Excelsior Springs Hospital and the Children’s Services Fund of Clay County to establish the Excelsior Springs Psychiatric Services. In just 18 months since its launch, this psychiatric initiative has reached over 193 students and currently faces a waitlist surpassing 380 individuals, encompassing both adults and children.

Despite the daunting numbers on the waitlist, a dedicated triage team diligently assesses each individual’s needs, ensuring that those in crisis receive timely interventions. This system emphasizes continuous engagement with patients, their families, and healthcare providers, overcoming barriers such as staffing, space constraints, and the intricacies of insurance processes that often hinder service provision.

At the heart of their approach is the Care Coordination Model, which ensures seamless collaboration among healthcare providers, therapists, and social workers. This model has fostered strong partnerships within the educational system, providing direct support through school counselors and community advocates. Notably, their services are inclusive, offering outpatient care to all age groups, with special provisions for children in crisis.

Their care strategy is underpinned by a holistic evaluation and treatment planning process that incorporates both medication-based and positive therapeutic interventions. These practices are rooted in trauma-informed, recovery-oriented principles, distinguishing services through the integrated efforts of psychiatric professionals, care coordinators, and social support staff. Their use of validated assessment tools further underscores their commitment to evidence-based care.

Personal testimonials highlight the transformative impact of these services. One poignant story involves a student who, despite initial reluctance, discovered a newfound engagement with therapy, leading to significant personal growth and an active desire for continued treatment.

The establishment of the psychiatric clinic has been heralded as a critical resource by local social workers, addressing a long-standing gap in accessible mental health care. It offers a beacon of hope for families who previously faced logistical barriers to obtaining care in distant cities. In the short time in which the program has operated, its positive impact is only just beginning to be shown.
