Excelsior Springs Community Encouraged to Participate in Great American Smokeout

Great American Smokeout

Every third Thursday of November marks The Great American Smokeout, a nationwide campaign spearheaded by the American Cancer Society to encourage cigarette smokers to quit for better health. This year, Excelsior Springs Hospital and Excelsior Springs SAFE are rallying local participation, offering resources and support to help individuals take the first step toward a smoke-free life.

The Excelsior Springs Hospital plays a pivotal role in supporting this initiative. By combining expertise in cardiopulmonary and respiratory care, the hospital provides specialized services targeting both heart and lung health—areas most impacted by smoking. Their team is dedicated to helping patients reduce their risk of smoking-related illnesses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, and lung cancer.

Excelsior Springs SAFE, a local coalition focused on substance abuse prevention and education, complements these efforts by providing access to cessation resources like Missouri’s Tobacco Quitline. Available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or online at YouCanQuit.org, the Quitline offers personalized coaching and nicotine replacement therapies for eligible individuals. Teens aged 13-17 can also access free, youth-specific services through My Life My Quit, which can be reached by texting “Start My Quit” to 36072.

Quitting smoking is a significant challenge, but numerous resources are available for those ready to begin their journey. Services include behavioral coaching, pregnancy-specific programs, and options tailored for young adults. For Excelsior Springs residents, the collaboration between healthcare providers and local organizations offers wrap-around support so no one faces the process alone.

As The Great American Smokeout approaches on November 21, 2024, Excelsior Springs Hospital and Excelsior Springs SAFE invite the community to seize the opportunity to quit and start a healthier chapter. With comprehensive resources readily available, residents can take this important step toward improved well-being and longevity.
