Excelsior Springs, Mo. – The Excelsior Springs School District celebrated the grand opening of the new state-of-the-art Lewis Elementary School on Tuesday, December 5. The event marked the completion of the district’s mission to modernize its school buildings, following the rebuild of Cornerstone Elementary on the west side of town and the refresh of Elkhorn Elementary in Ray County.

City leaders, school officials, principals, students, and staff gathered at 5 p.m. for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new facility. At 6 p.m., the school welcomed the public for tours, showcasing the innovative design and thoughtful details of the new building.

The new Lewis Elementary features open, bright classrooms, modern technology, and nostalgic touches that honor its history. Portions of the former gymnasium floor have been repurposed as an accent wall outside the art room and across from the library. A mural detailing the history of Glenn W. Lewis, the school’s namesake, graces the hallways, while the old tiger sign has been transformed into a bulletin board greeter near the south entry. A replica of the iconic Grace Tiger, which once adorned the old gymnasium wall, provides a familiar and beloved symbol for students and staff alike.

Deputy Superintendent Mark Baltimore reflected on the transformation, noting, “I began my teaching career in the old Lewis Elementary over 20 years ago. It’s incredible to see this new facility, which I know will inspire our students and staff and provide the opportunities they need to succeed.”

The opening of Lewis Elementary marks a major achievement for the district, providing students in Excelsior Springs with modern learning spaces designed to inspire growth, spark creativity, and strengthen community pride.
