Excelsior Springs, Mo. – Excelsior Springs is pulling out all the stops for National Parks and Recreation Month this July, with the Parks and Recreation Department and Community Center unveiling a full month of free events aimed at bringing residents of all ages outdoors and into community spaces.

At the most recent City Council meeting, officials formally recognized July as Parks and Recreation Month in Excelsior Springs, joining a nationwide celebration that spotlights the essential role parks, trails, and recreational opportunities play in strengthening communities.

Brennan Kimball, Marketing Director for the Excelsior Springs Community Center and Parks Department, shared the full lineup of activities planned for the month. From block parties and movie nights to rock painting, fishing, yoga, and even a full-on flour war, the schedule is packed with ways to get active, get creative, and get connected.

“This is about celebrating everything that makes our parks and community spaces special,” Kimball said. “We want to make it fun and accessible for everyone. And did I mention everything is completely free?”

Participants can pick up a Parks & Rec Month Passport at any event. Attendees who collect at least 10 stamps will be entered into a prize drawing at the end of the month for goodies like tickets to the Kansas City Zoo, KC Mavericks, and other surprises.

Kimball encouraged the community to mark their calendars for several standout events planned throughout the month.

The Parks and Recreation Month Kickoff Block Party will take place on July 1 at 6 p.m. at Piburn Ballfield. This free community celebration includes a cookout, yard games, and plenty of family-friendly fun to get the month started on a high note.

On July 10 at 10:30 a.m., families can head to the Excelsior Springs Community Center Circle Drive for Building with Blake. This hands-on activity invites kids and their parents to construct their own birdhouses, which they’ll get to take home as a keepsake.

Youth Fishing Day will be held on July 12 at 8:30 a.m. at Century Park. The event is open to all ages, and while participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles, a limited number will be available on site. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest, smallest, and most unusual catches of the day.

Another anticipated highlight is the E-Town Hose Down on July 18 at 2 p.m. in the ESCC parking lot. The Excelsior Springs Fire Department will roll out the pumper truck and spray water high into the air, giving kids and grown-ups alike a chance to cool off in the splash zone.

The month wraps up with a messy and memorable finale. Messy Mania will take place on July 31 at 6 p.m. at the Community Center’s Circle Drive. Attendees should be ready to get messy with activities like pantyhose shaving cream duels, flour wars, and other creative chaos designed to close out Parks and Recreation Month with a bang.

Throughout July, there are also several “Art in the Park” mornings, family workouts, themed craft sessions, and two outdoor movie nights at Carolyn Schutte Pocket Park: Zootopia on July 12 and The Smurfs on July 26, both beginning at dusk.

“Whether you’re 5 or 95, there’s something on this calendar for you,” said Kimball.“Don’t sit this summer out,” Kimball said. “Come make memories with us.”
