DESCRIPTION:Moses Dickson was among the best-known African Americans in Missouri in the second half of the nineteenth century. He was an abolitionist and minister along with founding one of the largest African American service organizations throughout the South after the Civil War. He was a prominent member of the Missouri Republican Party\, and published articles and delivered speeches on an array of topics. He was\, in short\, among the most compelling characters in Missouri in his lifetime. Jeffery Smith PhD uses the history of Fr. Moses Dickson Cemetery to discuss the relationship between prominent African American figure Moses Dickson (1824-1901) and Black cemeteries in the state.ABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr. Jeff Smith has been a public historian and professor for more than four decades. Now a specialist in cemeteries and the ways people interact with them\, he is widely published and a popular speaker.\nThis presentation is sponsored by the Missouri Speakers Bureau.
