The streets of downtown Excelsior Springs came alive this weekend as the Downtown Excelsior Partnership celebrated its 18th year, marking a significant change in venue from Lovers Lane to the historic Hall of Waters Circle Drive area of the downtown. This year’s festival, featuring a food court and live music, drew a lively crowd despite the humid and hot weather.

Previously held on Lovers Lane, the festival’s move to the downtown area brought new energy and opportunities for both vendors and attendees. The food court, strategically placed around the Hall of Waters Circle Drive, offered a variety of delicious options, while live music on the steps of the Hall created a festive atmosphere that resonated throughout the day.

Among the many vendors, JMAC Creations stood out not just for their unique offerings but also for their enduring commitment to the festival. Owners Lee and Jenny McClelland have been a part of this event for 17 of its 18 years, only missing one year due to Jenny’s knee surgery. Their booth, showcasing handcrafted home decorations made from repurposed materials, has become a staple of the festival.

Lee McClelland shared the origins of their business, explaining how it all began with Jenny’s artistic flair and her father’s old wine barrels. “We’d tear down the wine barrels and use the parts to make home decorations. It’s very personal, with a piece of our family in each creation,” Lee said. Their unique items, such as charcuterie boards made from family walnut trees, often come with interesting stories. One memorable piece even included a bullet embedded in the wood, discovered during the sawing process.

Despite the challenging weather, vendors like JMAC Creations were busy all day, engaging with the community and sharing their stories. “It’s not just about selling; it’s about being part of the community and connecting with people,” Jenny McClelland emphasized.

The 18th year of the Downtown Excelsior Partnership festival highlighted the resilience and spirit of Excelsior Springs. The successful relocation to the downtown area and the turnout of both vendors and visitors underscore the community’s support and enthusiasm for this cherished event.
