The Excelsior Springs Museum and Archives recently closed the curtains on its much-anticipated annual rummage sale, marking yet another milestone in its growing popularity. This community-driven fundraiser has been a celebrated tradition for over eight years, with the past three hosted at the current venue in the former bank building on the corner of Thompson Ave. and Spring St.
The outpouring of community support was unmistakable, as every item available for purchase was generously donated. Deb Foster, a representative from the museum, commented, “All our donations, everything we showcased, came directly from our supportive community. We’re deeply grateful.” This year’s event spanned several days and filled two entire buildings with treasures, ready for their new homes.
Thanks to the cooperation of the city of Excelsior Springs, the museum was allowed to use the space to help raise funds to support the important local institution. Foster said the amount raised can fluctuate dramatically, but in 2022, “We managed to raise about $7,000 in our initial sale, and an additional couple thousand during the Water Fest weekend.”
Instead of allocating funds to a predetermined cause, the museum prioritizes immediate needs. “This past year saw significant repair and maintenance efforts. Our funds don’t cater to specific projects. They’re channeled into the museum’s most pressing needs, with building maintenance being a prime focus,” Foster explained.
