Citizens Concerned With Trash Pickup Schedule

A winter storm brought snow and slick roads this past week, forcing Republic Services to cancel trash routes for Thursday and Friday, which has upset and confused many citizens. The City of Excelsior Springs published this on the City website Wednesday:
Republic Services Residential Customers,
Due to recent severe weather causing dangerous driving conditions and dangerously cold temperatures, we are suspending services for Thursday, December 22nd & Friday, December 23rd.
We will recover ALL extra trash and recycling overage next week on your regular service day (Thur. 12/29 & Fri 12/30). Compost Connection will do the same with the Thursday & Friday yard-waste stops next week.
We understand with the holiday weekend coming up, it will provide some challenges to our Thursday & Friday routed customers, due to the increase in trash & recycling at their homes. We apologize for the inconvenience to those customers, but at Republic Services, safety is our #1 priority. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this delay as we try to keep our drivers and the community safe during this dangerous weather situation.
Take care & be safe.
Since Christmas falls on a weekend, there will be NO 1-DAY DELAY on service days this week. They have announced they will run their normal routes Monday through Friday.
Multiple residents raised concern about having extra bags, especially given the holiday weekend, that would force them to overfill their bins. The company has stated that they understand there will be extra bags and those will be picked up at the same time, even if they are outside of the bins.
In general, if your trash isn’t picked up on schedule, the company encourages you to leave it at the curb. There are two Republic Service workers for the city, so when problems occur, there may be a delay. If there are complaints, you may direct them to Republic Services, the City’s Public Works Department, or your city council members who approve the contract.
