Italian Way has been closed for more than two weeks while crews work to relevel a sinking railroad crossing before the city can resurface the road. The project, originally expected to take only a few days, has been repeatedly delayed by railroad scheduling, equipment issues, and weather, leaving drivers frustrated as nearby Kennedy and Salem avenues remain closed for another construction project.
The fatal wreck comes against the backdrop of ongoing disputes over truck safety in Mosby, where residents have repeatedly asked for route changes, better signage, and stricter enforcement. The intersection of U.S. 69 and Cameron Road, where Tuesday’s crash occurred, has been cited in public meetings as a hazard, especially during peak hauling hours when dump trucks line the road.
The Overlook soft launched beginning in October of 2024, and is ready to host everything from intimate ceremonies to outdoor weddings, following an extensive renovation funded through the American Rescue Plan Act. A ribbon-cutting was performed by Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce on Aug 7, with the guest list including mayors of both cities and heads of local businesses.
The meeting, which was meant to address routine city business alongside several high-profile agenda items, instead became a microcosm of the frustrations building in Mosby. From contentious plans to annex land linked to a quarry expansion, to simmering disputes over loose dogs and long-standing highway safety hazards, the conversation repeatedly boiled over, exposing deep divisions between residents and the city’s leadership.
