The City of Excelsior Springs is making strides toward transforming its west side business community
Excelsior Springs residents gathered at a public charrette on Thursday night to brainstorm ideas for transforming the long-abandoned hospital at Park and Superior Street, with suggestions ranging from new housing options to a nature conservatory overlooking the park. The meeting, organized in partnership with Kansas State University and the Technical Assistance to Brownfields Program, aimed to capture the community’s vision for the site, which has faced redevelopment challenges due to asbestos contamination and outdated infrastructure.
The Excelsior Springs City Council tackled a packed agenda Monday night, unanimously approving measures supporting local economic growth, historic preservation, and enhanced recreational opportunities. Actions included a Chapter 353 tax abatement for a historic property renovation, support for an all-abilities playground funding application, fee increases at the community center, a memorandum with MU Extension for an entrepreneurial conference, and a tax abatement extension for KC Machine.
Last month, Communities of Excellence 2026 announced that Excelsior Springs was among ten communities across the country to be awarded the prestigious Communities of Excellence recognition.
