Cornerstone Elementary Honors Veterans with Heartfelt Ceremony
Excelsior Springs, Mo. (Nov. 11, 2024)—On Monday morning, Cornerstone Elementary students gathered in the school gymnasium for a special Veterans Day celebration. They welcomed veterans and honored their service to the nation.
As the students filed into the gym, they were greeted by members of the Clay-Ray Veterans Association, who were joined by a handful of parents and community members for the occasion. Principal Jessica Broadbent opened the ceremony by addressing the students and introducing the honored guests, which included parents who are veterans, members of the Excelsior Springs Police Department who previously served in the armed forces, and representatives from the Clay-Ray Veterans Association.
Broadbent reminded student’s about of hosting the event honoring the men and women who have dedicated themselves to our country. She then passed the microphone to kindergarten teacher Linda Haskell-Sherman. Known for her longstanding commitment to the school and community, Haskell-Sherman led the students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, setting a tone of respect and patriotism.
Choir teacher Holly DeLeon followed by leading the student body in a touching rendition of the National Anthem, the children’s voices filling the gym with emotion. The ceremony continued as Haskell-Sherman invited the veterans in attendance to introduce themselves. One by one, they shared their names, branches of service, and reflections on what serving their country meant to them.
A somber moment followed as a member of the Clay-Ray Veterans Association performed “Taps,” a hauntingly beautiful tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.
To close the ceremony, DeLeon directed the students in singing “Make a Difference,” a song that resonated with a message of hope and responsibility. The lyrics, “We know what’s right, and we know what to do. The future can be brighter, it’s up to me and you!” reminded attendees of the importance of unity and making a positive impact.
Principal Broadbent expressed gratitude to the veterans and participants for making the event a memorable experience. Following the ceremony, students returned to their classrooms, where they were visited by local veterans who shared their service experiences and reflected on what it meant to serve their country.
