Lyrics on the Lawn Series Makes a Return after Rainy Setbacks

After a couple of cancellations due to rainy weather, the Lyrics on the Lawn series made a comeback at the Hall of Waters, with musical guests Western Hippie and Raquelitas Mexican Food.

Musicians, Mylon English and Dave Simmons came together in Kearney, Missouri and have been performing together ever since.

“About three years ago, we met at a little bar in Kearney, Missouri called Diddy’s,” said Simmons. “They were big on live music, and I hosted an open mic and played there off and on with a couple of other groups, and Mylon came in one night and we hit it off and started a band.”

Simmons and English have curated music that blends country and rock, reminiscent of the 2009-2014 era. However, they veer mostly to a style known as “Red Dirt.”

The genre is named after the color of soil in Oklahoma, which the singers take inspiration from, as well as other Texas country singers.

Previously performing at Wine Fest, returning to Excelsior Springs was a no-brainer. They were also influenced by musician B. Howard Crist, who performed at Lyrics on the Lawn on night one.

“When Bryce started here, we came to support him and met Keith Hudson, owner of Atlas Saloon,” said Simmons. “And then when he was putting this all together, he kind of reached out.”

Bringing a unique blend of country music to downtown, the band hopes locals will enjoy their music and appreciate the event.

“Music on the lawn, you know, there’s something different than staying at home or the normal things,” said English.” We hope people come out and just catch some live music.”
