Barrett Sentenced to 3 Years in MDOC for School Bus Hit and Run

Liberty, Mo – On Thursday, March 7, 2024, Kyle P. Barrett, 40, of Lawson, Missouri, was sentenced to a three-year term in the Missouri Department of Corrections stemming from a hit-and-run incident on December 2022 that injured a young child. Barrett pled guilty to Leaving the Scene of an Accident and causing Physical Injury, a Class E Felony, on February 29, 2024. Sentencing occurred at the 7th Judicial Circuit Court, Clay County, Missouri, and was handed down by Judge Shane Alexander.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of December 15, 2022, when Barrett, driving a late-model S-10 Chevy pickup truck, passed an Excelsior Springs school bus on the right shoulder as it was releasing students near the 24600 block of W. 92 Highway, close to Cameron Road. When illegally passing the bus, Barrett clipped a 7-year-old boy who was leaving the bus and then fled the scene.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office launched an immediate search for the vehicle and driver. On the early morning of December 16, 2022, they located the truck and arrested Barrett, who has since been held in the Clay County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.

Barrett’s sentencing brings to a close a troubling case that deeply affected the community, particularly the students and families of the Excelsior Springs School District.
